How to Style Cushions
Cushions are the ultimate soft furnishing to accessorise your living spaces with, be it your bedroom, living room, reading nook or gaming space. They let you add your personal style and amp up the cosiness and are a great way to add pops of colour and draw the eye to a point.
Below you’ll find everything you need to know about the types of cushions available and some styling guides to help you bring colour and texture into your personal spaces.
How to Choose the Perfect Array of Cushions
Cushions are also easily swapped out across the seasons and years, as your personal taste changes or as you shift your design direction. As interior design trends change frequently (hello, cottagecore seekers), you’ll be able to keep it up to date with the right array of filled cushions from our range.
Cushion Types
If you’ve stayed at a posh hotel in the city before or flicked through the pages of a home magazine, chances are you’ve spotted a beautifully styled bed covered in cushions. As cushions come in a lot of shapes and sizes, we’re going to start by breaking down the most common cushion sizes available in the Australian market.
Cushion Shapes and Sizes
- Square cushions – Typical sizing for square cushions include 50 x 50cm, 48 x 48cm, 45 x 45cm, 43 x 43cm and 41 x 41cm.
- Rectangle cushions – For rectangular cushions the most common sizes are 30 x 50cm, 35 x 55cm, 30 x 60cm, and 40 x 60cm.
- Circular cushions – Round cushions are measured across their diameter and commonly come in 38cm, 40cm or 45cm options.
Rounded shapes simulate organic visuals and suit rooms dedicated to natural fibres, tones and other aesthetics, whereas sharp corners create structure and lines for the eye to follow. Consider your space carefully and how you want to use it, as well as your preferred colour palette when thinking about cushion options.

If you’re looking for something a little bit different, you might like to check out our range of novelty cushions – think stars, animals and hearts to add something special to your kid’s room or nursery.
Cushion Styles
This is where you get to play around with your personal style. Maybe you’re into bohemian vibes and all things tassels, blue and white stripes for a modern coastal feel, or perhaps a neutral palette that celebrates natural textures like linen and wool.
Cushion Materials
You want to consider the material for your cushions based on how you want them to look, feel and function in your space. Playing around with different material textures while keeping your colour palette neutral is a great way to bring a timeless and classic feel to your home.
We have everything from faux fur cushions to knit cushions, which make for a cosy aesthetic during colder months. We also have printed & plain-dyed cushion options made from natural materials like leather, cotton, linen, and jute.
Cushion Colours
Often, we fall in love with cushions because of their colour, as they are a great way to create a visual “pop” of red, green, or ochre. They're a fun accessory to bring an accent colour into your space without having to make any major changes or purchase expensive furniture pieces. Currently, our customers really love these colours in particular:
- Ochre
- Blush
- Teal
- Beige
- White
- Charcoal
- Chocolate
- Terracotta
There’s almost a cushion to match any colour you could dream up. Just start browsing or give our customer service team help to find the perfect shade.
How to style cushions on your sofa or lounge
We recommend you look at the size and orientation of your lounge to first consider the size, shape and number of cushions that will fit. You may only want one or two, allowing the design of your sofa to dominate the space, or you may want a cushion in every couch corner, armchair or beanbag. Once you work out the right number and shape of the cushions, you can move on to thinking about the colours and textures that will best compliment your existing furniture and flooring.
To give you some inspiration, we’re outlining some common cushion placement options:
- 2-seater couches often have a cushion in each corner.
- 3-seater couches will have a cushion placed for each chair pad.
- Sectional couches usually have cluster cushions in the corner and then one on either end.
- Armchairs typically have one to two cushions placed in the centre or off-centre.
When styling, larger cushions are usually placed at the back with smaller cushions layered in front. We encourage you to play with different sizes, colours, and textures until you find the perfect combination for your living areas. You might even add throw rugs to bring your look together and add an extra comfort option for guests. Browse our entire collection of homewares for more options!
How to style cushions on your bed
There’s nothing more inviting than a sea of plush cushions on your bed, especially after a long day of work. You might like to use the guide below to help you plan out which cushions you need and how to style them to create the perfect bedroom retreat.
- European pillows – These classic, square pillows are great for adding height to your cushions curation, and they typically rest up against your wall or bedhead. We suggest two if you have a Queen size bed or smaller, and up to three if you have a King or Super King size bed.
- Pillows – Two standard pillows in your sheet set pillowcases and two standard pillows in your quilt cover set pillowcases.
- Cushions – Accent cushions are the last stage, starting with the largest against the pillows and ending with the smallest or a bolster cushion along the front.
Ultimately, the combination of cushion sizes, shapes and textures are completely up to you. Have fun with the process of layering cushions to find what feels right for you and your home. If you’re looking for some styling inspiration, head to our style hub to see our latest tips, tricks and ideas!
