A Breakdown of Jersey Sheets
It’s no secret that most of us love the feeling of that much-loved, well-worn t-shirt we all have sitting in a set of drawers at home. There is something extremely comfortable about a fabric that has been washed countless times, a sort of sentimental softness that is only achieved with time and care.
Whilst we can’t offer you sheets that we’ve washed a thousand times, we can offer you the same sensation, which are Jersey sheet sets. Imagine sleeping in that same soft fabric, the kind that warms to your skin temperature and has a tiny bit of stretch to it - that’s what sleeping in Jersey sheets is like. You may have found your way to this page because you’ve heard it flown around in conversation, but let us explain fully what makes a sheet Jersey, how its different from say, traditional cotton sheet types, and best practice when it comes to product care.
First and foremost, let’s talk about the weave. When we classify a sheet, we identify the composition (i.e, the fibres it’s made from), the feel (what it’s like against the skin), and of course, the weave, which tells us how the sheet was constructed. Most sheets today that we commonly know and see are made from a square weave, or a sateen weave. Both offer different advantages in function and aesthetics, but Jersey sheets are special, as they are uniquely constructed with a knitted weave. It’s exactly what it sounds like; the yarns of the sheet have been knitted together, sort of like how one might knit a scarf - but done with a machine. This type of weave gives Jersey sheets that added bit of stretch, and makes them feel like old t-shirts.
Jersey sheets are often quite popular amongst kids & teens, thanks to their stretchy, soft feel. However, it’s important to note that due to its knitted weave, Jersey can snag easily, in the same way your favourite knitted jumper might.

When it comes to breathability, Jersey sheets do well provided their fabric possesses some natural fibre types. Cotton jersey breathes extremely well and is great for temperature regulation. However, some Jersey sheets will have a blend of fibres, like our Bed T Organic Sheet Sets from Bambury. These contain 30% Tencel, which is a branded fibre you can learn more about here. As a quick summary, Tencel is classed as a synthetic fibre - though it does originate from wood pulp, and its low-impact production makes it a sustainable fibre type. Its main benefits are that it offers:
- added softness
- better colour retention
- added thermoregulation
- wrinkle-resistant
- anti-bacterial
The blend of both organic cotton and tencel in these sheets means the best of both fibres, and results in a sheet set that is incredibly easy to care for. Simply machine wash on cold and then hang up to line dry. Try and wash jersey with jersey to avoid getting any snags or pulls.
🌡 Our Temperature Recommendation
Jersey sheets are great for all year ‘round, but we know not everyone is built the same (or lives in the same house!) We recommend jersey if you:
- Like fabric that warms quickly to your temperature
- Like some added stretch in your sheets
- Don’t like flannelette in winter, but want something that feels cosy
- Prefer a marle yarn aesthetic
- Love the feel of an old, worn shirt on your skin!
